Anna

How do you sign the letter I in BSL?

Passive hand open, palm towards you. With your dominant index finger, touch the tip of your passive middle finger. No movement. I is the 9th letter of the two-handed BSL alphabet.

The sign, demonstrated on video by a Deaf teacher.

Third vowel, third fingertip: between E (index) and O (ring finger). It is the vowel beginners mix up most — count the fingers.

You will fingerspell I in names like Isla, Isaac and Imogen and places like Ipswich, Inverness and Ilford. Practise it next to H and J, its neighbours in the alphabet.
