How do you sign the letter P in BSL?

Hold your passive index finger upright. Pinch its tip between the thumb and index finger of your dominant hand, forming the loop of a P at the top of the stroke. No movement. P is the 16th letter of the two-handed BSL alphabet.

The sign, demonstrated on video by a Deaf teacher.

P is drawn on the passive index like D and K, but at the very top: the pinch is the loop of the letter.

You will fingerspell P in names like Poppy, Peter and Phoebe and places like Plymouth, Portsmouth and Preston. Practise it next to O and Q, its neighbours in the alphabet.
