How do you sign the letter L in BSL?

Passive hand open, palm up. Lay your dominant index finger flat along the passive palm. No movement. L is the 12th letter of the two-handed BSL alphabet.

The sign, demonstrated on video by a Deaf teacher.

L suggests the lowercase l: a single straight finger lying on the palm. Compare with M and N, which lay more fingers in the same place.

You will fingerspell L in names like Leo, Lily and Lucas and places like London, Leeds, Liverpool and Leicester. Practise it next to K and M, its neighbours in the alphabet.
